Binissalem Town Guide, Mallorca (Majorca)Mallorca Towns - Binissalem Guide
Binissalem is a 30 km (19 Miles) or about 20 minutes from Mallorca’s
main airport in Palma. Binissalem is wine central, Mallorca. Binissalem
became an official Denominación de Origen of Spain in the early
1990’s and chances are that if you order Mallorcan “Vino Tinto”
on the island, what you’ll get will more than likely have been produced
here. Binissalem is a quiet town which has barely been touched by the
tourist industry that so drives much of the rest of Mallorca. Of the few
tourists that do find their way here most do so to deliberately get away
from the loud resorts and use the town as a staging post for cultural
excursions further a field.
Binissalem’s skyline is dominated by
the church of Santa Maria of Robines, a lovely Gothic church dating back
to the 15th century. The town can feel like it has been transported into
the modern day out of the 18th century, with very little evidence of the
modern Mallorca on show. In fact the town’s architecture is officially
protected as Binissalem has been designated a town of special historical
importance or “historic-artistic site” in the early 1980’s
by the Mallorca government. One lively thing that does happen in Binissalem
is the Festa d'es Verema which takes place every year September to celebrate
the grape harvest. If you attend this event be prepared to see the polar
opposite of a sleepy central Mallorcan town as the festival calls for
wine, wine and yet more wine.
